Parag Agrawal, IIT-Bombay Graduate, Is New Twitter CEO

With his appointment as the Twitter CEO, Parag Agrawal has joined the group of Indian-origin silicon valley CEOs which includes names like Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella.

New Delhi: Parag Agrawal, 37, an IIT-Bombay graduate, has replaced Jack Dorsey as the new Twitter chief executive officer, becoming the youngest CEO in top 500 companies. The Board of Directors unanimously appointed him as the new CEO.

  1. Parag Agrawal did his graduation from IIT-Bombay and PhD in computer science from Stanford University.
  2. He joined Twitter in October 2011 as an ads engineer and soon after held the title of the company's 'Distinguished Software Engineer'.
  3. Twitter appointed Parag Agrawal as its Chief Technology Officer in 2017.
  4. Before joining Twitter, he did research internships at AT&T, Microsoft and Yahoo.
  5. With his appointment as the company's CEO, Mr Agrawal has joined the group of Indian-origin silicon valley CEOs which includes names like Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella.

In its press note, Twitter gives some details of Parag's career within the company. Twitter notes, "Parag Agrawal joined Twitter in 2011 and has served as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) since October 2017. As CTO, he has been responsible for the Company's technical strategy, leading work to improve development velocity while advancing the state of Machine Learning across the company. Prior to being appointed CTO, Parag had risen to be Twitter's first Distinguished Engineer due to his work across revenue and consumer engineering, including his impact on the re-acceleration of audience growth in 2016 and 2017."

Dorsey himself confirmed the transition after hours of raging speculation that he was being ousted by the Twitter board. "I've decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders....The board ran a rigorous process considering all options and unanimously appointed Parag. He's been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs," he said in a message to Twitter staff.

Since December 2019, Mr. Agrawal has also been working on Project Bluesky, an independent team of open source architects, engineers and designers to combat abusive and misleading information on Twitter.

Bluesky is seeking to introduce a new decentralised technology, the idea being that Twitter and others will become clients of Bluesky and rebuild their platforms on top of the standard, Mr. Dorsey has said previously.
