Google reveals Year in Search: IPL, CoWin, Tokyo Olympics top trending words
Google India today announced the results for its Year in Search 2021, recapping the top search trends of 2021 in India. The listing reveals what Indians searched for the most throughout the year across news, sports, entertainment, and other categories. Check out the results below.
Cricket, Covid vaccination and Tokyo Olympics were among the top searches on Google in 2021. Among the most searched terms, the majority also wanted to know ‘What is Black Fungus’. The list had a wide range of queries ranging from ‘What is Taliban’, ‘What is Remdesivir’, to the evidently academic ‘What is the factorial of hundred’.
Indian Premier League, vaccine portal , the T20 World Cup, Euro Cup and Tokyo Olympics are the overall top trending keywords on the search engine giant in India this year.
Tokyo Olympics, Black Fungus, Afghanistan, West Bengal elections, Tropical cyclone Tauktae and lockdown made it to the top 10 among the most searched news events by Indians. Globally, the number one news story was Afghanistan due to the US ending its military presence in the country after 20 years. Other top news searches of 2021 included AMC stock, the Covid vaccine, and Dogecoin.
Apart from IPL and T20 World Cup, the other most searched sporting events of 2021 were Euro Cup, Copa America, Wimbledon, Paralympics and French Open.
Most searched personalities:
Indian track and field athlete Neeraj Chopra topped the list with his historic performance at the Tokyo Olympics by winning independent India’s first-ever medal in athletics.
He was followed by superstar Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan, who was embroiled in a major controversy after being booked by the NCB in an alleged Cordelia cruise drug case in October 2021.
The list also included two more 2020 Tokyo Olympic medalists PV Sindhu and Bajrang Punia.
Tesla founder Elon Musk and celebrities such as , and Raj Kundra were among the names that topped the list.
'Near me' searches:
Google's "Near me" searches, which show places of interest near where a person is, saw searches on Covid vaccine, Covid tests, and Covid hospitals. Searches for oxygen cylinders and CT scans also spiked as people fought the tide of the pandemic over the course of the year. Queries on food deliveries, tiffin services and takeout restaurants also surged with people looking to ride out the intermittent lockdowns.
Most-Googled films in India in 2021:
Suriya-starrer Tamil superhit “Jai Bhim”, Sidharth Malhotra-starrer “Shershaah” and Salman Khan’s “Radhe” were the top three films that people in India Googled.
“Radhe” was followed by Bell Bottom in the fourth spot and Marvel Studios’ “Eternals”. Mohanlal’s Malayalam thriller
“Drishyam 2” was the eighth most-searched film in India.
"Eternals" topped the global Google searches under the movies category. "Black Widow", "Dune", "Shang-Chi and the
Legend of the Ten Rings” are the other most-searched films across the world in 2021, Google said.
